Cellnex enters the capital of Nearby Sensor

Reinforces positioning in IoT, distributed computing and 5G

Cellnex Telecom and Nearby Sensor have agreed to the incorporation of the telecommunications infrastructure operator in the shareholding of the start-up with a contribution of 0.5 million euros equivalent to a 15% stake in the capital. Nearby Sensor, established in 2013 and based in Barcelona, develops systems and applications for Smart Cities, infrastructures and large equipment.

"For Cellnex - says the global director of Innovation and Strategy, Òscar Pallarols -, the investment in Nearby Sensor is part of our open and collaborative innovation strategy, identifying entrepreneurial initiatives that, starting from border research to universities and research centers, knowledge, ends up having a translation into innovative value and service proposals within the field of connectivity and telecommunications ».

The entrance of Cellnex Telecom in Nearby Sensor completes the shareholding of this technological start-up dedicated to the deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT), distributed computing (Edge Computing), and the automation of IT-OT hybrid processes (Information Technology / Operational Technology), which have to hatch with the next arrival of the 5G networks. Among the shareholders of the Catalan start-up, in addition to Cellnex, are the founders of the company -professionals linked to the implementation of technology in the public management of the city of Barcelona-, Urbidermis of the Santa & Cole group and Eacom engineering.

Of particular interest to Cellnex was the participation of Nearby Sensor in the constitution, together with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), of the Nearby Computing spin-off. Nearby Computing offers a differential and high-tech product for corporate IoT and 5G deployments, based on the research generated in the BSC-CNS and the UPC. These services allow both companies and administrations to automate complex processes of computing on the edge, for IoT and 5G networks, combining different commercial software products and the integration of hardware and software components.

Nearby Sensor and Nearby Computing are complementary solutions that, together, provide a global approach to the problem of deploying large IoT networks.

The capabilities of Nearby Computing technology have led to the start of joint projects with companies as relevant as Cellnex Telecom itself, Cisco Systems, or Intel. Currently the company is preparing a demonstrator of the architectures that it poses to present at the Mobile World Congress that will take place in Barcelona next February.
