The battle of virtual assistants is won by Google

Smart speakers become the star gift this Christmas

First it was Siri, then joined the cause Microsoft with Cortana to get the big landing in recent months with Google Assistant and, especially, Alexa from Amazon. The ecommerce giant brought its virtual assistant to Spain in November and has made this campaign in many Spanish homes.

However, the battle to dominate a business that knocks on the door is still to be resolved. For the moment, this 2018 victory is taken by Google. According to Loup Venturas, an analytics company, the search engine giant's virtual assistant has been able to respond correctly almost 9 out of 10 times.

In second position appears Apple's well-known Siri, whose effectiveness at the time of answering requests from the HomePod speaker has reached 74.6%. For its part, Amazon's Alexa is third on the list, with 72.5% of questions answered. Away from the podium Cortana appears with only six out of ten correct answers.

The Loup Ventures report analyzes the effectiveness of virtual assistants when responding to commands and requests. Out of a total of 800 requests, the Google assistant successfully understood all the issues.

Siri almost achieved the right to understand 99.6% of requests. While the percentage in the Echo and Cortana drops to 99% in the Amazon and remains at 99.4% in the Microsoft.

The study also organizes the effectiveness of the answers based on five categories: local information, possibilities for purchases, help to get directions, general information and orders of actions such as setting reminders.

Regarding local information, with 95% of requests answered, Home and Google Assistant top the list, ahead of Siri, Alexa and Cortana. In addition, Google Home and Assistant are at the head of the other categories, both commercial information, indications and general information, except in the case of orders, where Siri has managed to snatch the first position.

Female voices
All these voices, in addition to having a high degree of success, also have in common that they are feminine. "Sometimes gender stereotypes are so established in our daily lives that they go unnoticed," say the promoters of the Voices in Equality campaign.

A movement promoted by the agency Tangoº, together with the National Confederation of Women in Equality and the Association of Men for Gender Equality (AHIGE). These organizations have come together to ask that virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa stop having the voice of a woman.

With this initiative they intend to claim gender equality in virtual assistants. In addition to opening the debate on this issue, they are making a request to Renfe and Correos, both public entities, to change the identity of their assistants.

According to denounce the promoters of the campaign, this "is the result of various studies that say that users of all genres prefer to interact with women, as the female voice is perceived as more helpful, rather than with male voices, associated with the authority".
