An ESADE report reveals that vehicles account for half of sales abroad in Spain, although 84% are made by subsidiaries of foreign companies

Vehicles are the most exported products from Spain. Specifically, 58% of foreign sales are produced from the manufacturing sector, and motor vehicles account for 48% of exports. The report 'Exports of the medium and large Spanish company' carried out by ESADE commissioned by HSBC, reveals that 90% of exports in manufacturing are carried out by unlisted companies and, within them, 84% of sales from Spain are made by foreign companies.

The largest exporter of vehicles is Seat, with a volume of 10,188 million euros. Close behind is Renault España, with 8,199 million euros, and in third place, Ford España, with an export volume of 5,755 million euros. Precisely this Tuesday the data of trade deficit has been published by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, which states that the Spanish automotive industry registered a surplus of 134.8 million euros in August, which represents a very strong of 210% compared to the same month last year.

The exports of the sector accounted for 2.042 billion euros in August, which represents a rise of 6%. Unlike imports, which fell by almost 7% to 1,907 million euros.

Importance of Spanish exporters

But what has most caught the attention of the authors of the report is the "enormous difference" between the first exporter of clothing and footwear and the second. Thus, the multinational Inditex takes 38% of the total exports of this industry, the second in sales volume in Spain. The company of Amancio Ortega has an export volume of 10,398 million euros per year, far from the second , Punto Fa, with 1,417 million euros.

The author of the report, Carmen Ansotegui, explained during the presentation of the study the importance of Spanish companies being those that have more weight in exports since the wealth of a country is "directly proportional" to the number of exporting companies because they create value «here and abroad». In addition, it has recognized that the subsidiaries of foreign companies in Spain provide "much added value" in matters of wages and employment.

The main destination of foreign sales in Spain is Europe, a market that some analysts consider "local". 59% of all products are sold here, 11% in South America, 8% in North America, 7% in Asia, 3% in the Middle East, 2% in Central America, 1% in Oceania and 1% in Southeast Asia. .
