Brussels investigates whether Amazon uses its customers' data commercially

The European Commissariat of Competition has sent questionnaires to several companies, but says that they are still in the «very preliminary» phase

As before Google or Apple, another technological giant is also in the crosshairs of Brussels. The European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, announced on Wednesday that her department is gathering information on the use that Amazon is making of the commercial data of its clients, facilitated in turn by the retailers that operate on the platform, and to whom is already directing

It is not yet a "formal" investigation, but rather a "very preliminary" phase to ensure that they have all the information to "understand the case". "If you, like Amazon, receive data from the vendors, which can be completely legitimate," Vestager asked, "do you use them then to figure out what the next fad is going to be, what do people want or what offers do they like?" .

What the competition technicians want to clarify is whether the e-commerce giant took advantage of this wealth of information to develop its own strategies and have a competitive advantage over third parties. If so, could have been violating the rules of the free market and end up being fined for it.

"The whole question revolves around the data" and its use, the commissioner emphasized. Almost a year ago, the European Commission forced Amazon to return 250 million euros in unpaid taxes to Luxembourg, considering that the tax advantages granted by that State were illegal.

Tesla, also investigated
On the other hand, Tesla is being investigated by the US Department of Justice for possible alteration of the price of its shares. In particular, it is suspected that the statements weeks ago of its CEO, Elon Musk, about its intention to take the luxury electric vehicle manufacturer on the stock market would have had as its ultimate goal to shoot the value of the securities and take advantage (he controls the twenty%).
